Great Lost Bands: Flying Nun

First, Flying Nun is a label, not a band (sorry if the title of the post led you to think otherwise).  Second, the New Zealand record company is responsible for some of the finest rock and pop of the last 25 years.  In the ’80s bands like The Clean, The Chills, The Sneaky Feelings and The Verlaines helped define the Dunedin sound and influence an entire generation of indie and jangle bands like Pavement, R.E.M., The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Jay Reatard and others.  While we at Commotion tend to push the latest and greatest in music, it’s important to remember that getting acquainted with the classics is just as important as discovering those new bands.  What can we say except that we highly recommend you explore the sounds of the label and getting to know these bands.  Enjoy the videos and MP3 below.

The Sneaky Feelings – Husband House

The Verlaines – Pyromaniac

Gah, the new Grizzly Bear album cannot get here soon enough.  The songs that have premiered so far have all been amazing and this new one is no exception.

The still unnamed new album is set for a spring release.  MP3 via G vs. B

New Black Lips + Short Fuse

It rocks.  It rolls.  It’s the Black Lips.  Not sure which of the guys is singing on this track, but it sounds (ever-so-slightly) more polished than their usual fare, which is to say, it sounds not polished at all.  ANYHOO, enjoy the track from the forthcoming 200 Million Thousand.  Also, beware, there’s a nice greeting from Vice Records at the end of the track but such is the price we pay for the Internet ruining it for everyone.

New Black Lips MP3 + Cover Art

blacklips

Okay okay, it’s been slow for the holiday season posts.  But in my defense, I’ve been busy eating tamales and I’ve been thinking of you, dear reader, the entire time.  Did Santa get you everything you wanted?  Anycrap, it took something big to drag us back to work from our Frasier reruns and cereal-for-lunch lifestyle.  The Black Lips have finally debuted a track from their upcoming February release, 200 Million Thousand.  The Atlanta lotharios dig out a summer-of-love guitar line and combine it with their trademark sloppiness.  Do we hear a little bit of maturity creeping in here?  Our jaws have officially dropped after hearing this one.  Enjoy the MP3 below and check out the optical-illusiony cover art after the jump.

Local Natives + New Song and Winter Tour

localnatives_promo_05

So a while back we told you about L.A. up and comers, Local Natives.  Poised to release their debut album, Gorilla Manor, in early ’09, they were nice enough to send us the MP3 for “We Come Back” as a holiday gift to whet our appetites.  We think the song’s about going home during Christmas break and running into old people that you don’t really want to see.  And, honestly, who can’t relate to that?

Also, don’t look now, but we were right — as usual — about these guys blowing up since they’ve started to get airplay from the local L.A. radio giants KROQ and Indie 103.1 in recent weeks.  Ridic.  And if that wasn’t enough, these guys have gone and lined themselves up with a winter tour.  Day-um!

Enjoy the MP3 below and get tour dates after the jump!
