The Suzan + “Home”

If I told you that your new favorite song would come from an all-girl Japanese punk band would you believe me?  Probably not.  What if I told you that said song was produced by Bjorn Yttling, the Bjorn part of Peter Bjorn and John, who has done astounding work behind the boards for Lykki Li, The Shout Out Louds and his own band among others.  Interested yet?  No?  Come on, don’t make me beg.  Look, I’m asking you to take my word on this one.  Sometimes you just have to trust me on these things.

The Strokes Return To Recording

Well this is exciting.  With the protracted recording of their fourth album quickly turning into be the indie rock Chinese Democracy, The Strokes are finally returning to work — while making time for scrabble of course — with hopes of completing the project soon.  Drummer, Fab Moretti, noted in an interview with the BBC that the band hopes to have the album out this September.  We’re not holding our breath.

New Band Alert: Gamble House

After a few listens I’ve determined that Gamble House‘s self-titled record is the best Grizzly Bear record of the year.  Just kidding … sort of.    Their music swells and strains with the same grace and sophistication as those Brooklynites, but without any of the nagging hype.  Throw in harmonies like Fleet Foxes and production like Beach House and you’ve got yourself a late entry into the album of the year conversation.  Definitely keep an eye on these guys and if you’re in L.A., be sure to check them out during their residency at the Silverlake Lounge.

Kitsune Maison 8

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Is it a fashion house?  Is it a record label?  Is it just an awesome source of the coolest music and clothes?  Probably yes.  The new preview for the upcoming Kitsune Maison 8 is verrrry promising and the first two tracks have been banging on repeat for a while now.  We’re looking forward to hearing more — and honestly, it’s been too long since a band made a fun song about surfing (why should the Beach Boys and The Ramones be the only ones to get in on the waves?)  Also, be sure to check out the Kitsune iTunes app at their MySpace page.  Enjoy.

Vampire Weekend + Horchata

horchata

Horchata is the sweet, cinnamon-y rice drink that washes away the spiciest assault of carne asada and al pastor like a wave erases footprints from the sand.  So how does this make it the title of the first song from Vampire Weekend’s upcoming album, Contra?  I’m not sure.  I just know that hearing new material from these guys is like seeing an old friend again.

Phoenix + Ou Boivent Les Loups

phoenixouboiventlesloups

It’s been too long since I’ve had the chance to make a superfluous post about the band of the year (sorry Grizzly Bear and Dirty Projectors), Phoenix.  A quick check of their blog reveals a host of news including new tour dates and a new track dedicated to Marie Antoinette for download.  The acoustic ditty is a far cry from anything on the highly polished Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix and honestly seems like a toss away or outtake but it’s still better than 99.9% of new music else out there.

Check it out here
