You knew the guys at Rockstar did a phenomenal job re-creating the city that never sleeps for the latest edition of GTA, even going so far as to document light patterns and neighborhood demographics to capture the day-to-day reality. Check out this Flickr photo set from Matthew Johnston that compares the pixelated version of NYC to the real thing.

Certain artists immediately spring to mind when you think of iconic style.  The Beatles with their black suits and boots, The Ramones who managed to unify a complete musical sound and aesthetic, David Bowie and his various incarnations, Andre 3000 (sorry Kanye) for proving that white towels and throwback jerseys should be left on the basketball court.  The list goes on and on.

The Specials, while not immediately identifiable as style icons, had a look that unified their multicultural roots and presented the band as a singular unit.  Now the guys are being immortalized by Fred Perry.  Inspired by the picture of Terry Hall (below), the Fred Perry team re-created the sweater in a limited-edition run of 500.

The County Board of Supervisors’ new ordinance that will effectively eliminate Taco Trucks in unincorporated Los Angeles County goes into effect at 12:00 AM on Thursday morning.  Accordingly, we’re having a little get-together to celebrate this wheeled Angeleno culinary institution, while lamenting the myopic politicians who think they know what’s best for us.  Meet us in East Los Angeles at Tacos El Galuzo at 5555 Whittier Blvd. between 8 PM and 12 AM.  You’ll be supporting Juan Torres, a truck owner directly affected by the new law, and you’ll get to eat good cheap food while enjoying the company of like-minded people.  Sr. Torres’ truck isn’t far from numerous other East LA mainstays, so plan an eastside odyssey and add us to your itinerary.  Hurry, starting Thursday, purchasing a taco from one of these “peddlers” will be abetting a criminal!

It sounds like Pharrell and co. have rediscovered their Rump Shaker ways with a track that reminds of 2 Live Crew mixed with some Steely Dan schmaltz. Enjoy.

Shutter Shades

This apartment building makes my eyes pop out of my head in a good way.  Designed by Dutch architect Ben van Berkel, 5 Franklin Place is noted for curved black bands outlining the perimeter of the building that lend a sense of movement and grace.
