“The Rise of Barack Obama” by Pete Souza

Pete Souza is a former White House photographer for Ronald Reagan and current photography professor at the University of Ohio.  In an unbelievably prescient move, he decided to follow Barack Obama way back in 2005 on the very day he was sworn in as a U.S. senator.  Hey Pete, who do you like in Wimbledon [...]

You’re Not My Father by Paul Slocum

Watch this DJ Tanner and Joey Gladstone tear-jerker and tell me it isn’t the most bizarre, strangely fascinating, surreal, hilarious, hypnotic thing you’ve ever seen.  I honestly couldn’t take my eyes off the screen, I thought I was dreaming.

Mr. Brainwash, “Life Is Beautiful” Exhibition in L.A.

There are only a few cool things about living in L.A.:

Getting to consistently gripe about a city that’s probably one of the 3-4 best in the world in nearly every respect
The vibrant street art that consistently pops up around you
The taco trucks

This post is about number 2.  No, not that kind of number 2 (that would be gross) – [...]

New Beck Cover Art and Track List for “Modern Guilt”

So the long-rumored title is actually the, you know, actual title. “Modern Guilt” was produced by Danger Mouse and is:
A tightly assembled group of songs that range in lyrical tone from introspection and social commentary to off the cuff wordplay and lighthearted humor. Musically, the album’s ten tracks vacillate between economy and experimentation, hybrid and [...]

More Hotrod Awesomeness + Piet Mondrian Nikes

Hotrod has to be one of L.A.’s best-kept secrets.  This place might not have the immediate name recognition of other streetwear shops but damn they have some cool stuff.  Take a look at their online store or give them a call at 310.446.5527 if you hope to have any chance of landing these.

Upper Deck Swings For Obama

Upper Deck baseball cards weighed in on the Democratic nomination with this limited-edition parody card. Love it. Check out the full gallery here (the Jackie Robinson/McCain/Obama one is pretty great too).

eBoy’s L.A. Poster

Brand new and now available for purchase here along with other cities.  Yeah, we always thought L.A. was a little cartoony too.  This seems to capture the spirit of the city with a nice sense of whimsy.

5 Franklin Place

This apartment building makes my eyes pop out of my head in a good way.  Designed by Dutch architect Ben van Berkel, 5 Franklin Place is noted for curved black bands outlining the perimeter of the building that lend a sense of movement and grace.

Hit Rewind - Vintage VHS Covers

File this next to Abba, The Hives, Ikea and Bjorn Borg as great cultural exports from Sweden.  Check out these incredible covers of vintage Swedish VHS tapes.  Is that the Swedish Alec Baldwin in the picture below?  More pictures after the jump.
Thanks to QBN for the tip!

Ricky Powell x Lush Life Mugs & Ts

We’re guessing that wasn’t Eazy’s first MUG shot! Amiright!?! No? Anyway, when not busy being shouted out in Beastie Boy songs, Ricky Powell managed to sneak in a pretty-dang-impressive body of work. We kid of course, there’s simply no denying Powell’s influence on hip hop culture during its formative years. [...]

HOTROD - New T-Shirts

I’ve never recommended shirts that are NSFW, but these are nice.  Like, really, really nice.  Check more shirts out here (Vans too while you’re at it) and give thanks that a store like HOTROD exists.

Okay, so after the huge response that Shepard Fairey got for his Progress and Hope posters he thought that he’d pass the power to the people. Now you can make them for yourself, PDF style. Just download here. Be sure to plaster these everywhere you can since the campaign needs us more [...]

Jean Nouvel & The Fight To Build His Tower

Look at that building in the picture.  Isn’t it nice?  Doesn’t it look like it fits into the scheme of the neighborhood? Almost like it’s been there all along.  Well, sadly, it might not get built.  New York Mag has the full scoop on why Pritzker-Prize-winner Jean Nouvel’s addition to New York’s Museum of Modern Art [...]
